I really have to admit that at first I didn't like "Sabal Palms and the Southern Squall" by Terry Overton. I thought it was really hard to get into the story line and really was bored and thinking " Why do I have to read this book but let me tell you now that I finish the book I am glad that I read it. The message of the book is God will use anything to get his message to those who needs to hear, or in the instances in this book "read". I don't know if the author meant to show that even when we feel like what we do or "write as in the book" is any good God can use it if we do our best. 

Yes, there was a few times I even wanted to quit reading because the book has death and murder in it and to be quit honestly I wanted to throw my hands up in the air and say "I quit reading" because all authors want to write about anymore is death and car wrecks, both of which I had enough of in "real Life" but again I say I am glad I didn't.  A few pages later the book talks about Tamar, " a Biblical character that was the sermon topic on Sunday, of course the two had different things pointed out but I was thinking "Wow" I really like it when the books I read talk about what we heard church, ISN'T GOD GOOD!!!!!! 

What does four delightful women, a homeless teen, a rebellious son, a grieving lover who is at the bottom, a son who lost his faith, and a hired murderer have in common? To find out the answer read "Sabal Palms and the Southern Squall" by Terry Overton. I am anxiously waiting for the next book in this series.

About the Author

Terry Overton obtained her Ph.D. in Psychology and her Ed.D. in special education. She taught in public schools and was a school psychologist and a professor before retiring in 2016. Her university experiences included teaching at Longwood University in Virginia, the University of Texas-Brownsville, The University of Texas-Pan American, University of Texas Rio Grande Valley, and Stephen F. Austin State University. She held positions as Dean and Department Chair during her tenure in higher education. Her areas of research included behavior disorders, learning disorders, autism, and research in higher education. She currently resides in Laguna Vista, Texas. She enjoys Biblical history and general Bible studies, writing, blogging, and visiting with friends and family. Her books have been recognized and received awards from Firebird Book Awards, American Writing Awards, and have earned five stars from Readers Views and Readers Favorites. Her books have been recognized Finalist for the International and National Book Awards.

This book will take the reader to the southern coast of Texas. In fact, this book happens at the very bottom tip of Texas. The reader will feel the warm sea breezes, view the coastal sunsets and sunrises, and experience the friendships of four close women friends. Here is a sample:

 

The women gathered at the swimming pool and shed their cover-ups. Next, each lady

took out her favorite sunscreen lotions and creams and sprayed and squirted so much on, they all

looked almost as pasty as a bottle of glue. No one talked at all during this process of slathering

on thick coats of varying SPFs. It was a polite, unspoken agreement that no forbidden words

were ever mentioned when the ladies were in swimwear. Words like cellulite, wrinkles, fat, fatty

tissue, weight, weight loss, weight gain, age spots, and—the worst words ever—skin cancer were

completely and totally off limits.

 

In times of crises, these four women always bind together and help each other. They have been friends for over twenty years. Here is an excerpt of one of their conversations during a pool party:

 

What strangers might not understand is the banter back and forth was exactly the only way they could get along. They enjoyed it. They thrived on it.

 

“Oh, fiddle-faddle, Bonnie, last week you told me you thought the salon was opening up

this week,” Mary jabbed. “It didn’t.”

 

“I didn’t say that. I said I heard it might be opening next month.”

 

“You said next week as sure as I am floating on this raft.”

 

“Had your hearing checked lately?”

 

“Right after you get yours checked.”

 

And they both laughed. It was always entertaining.

 

“Well, horsefeathers! I need to get this hair trimmed again. It is all cattywampus on the

sides.”

 

“What? You’ve got a cat in there?” Bonnie laughed.

 

“Feels like it,” Mary retorted.

I really liked "A Promise Engraved" by Liz Tolsma. Yes, there were parts that made me cry. When I finished the book I was wanting to read more about these characters. This book had twists that I didn't see coming.  Yes, the book has violence and mentions sexual assaults but the book isn't overly graphic. I really liked the dual timeline, I think the book has more of fictional history than present day. I recommend this book to reader that likes fiction history and a love story that really you can't see how it ends until the end.  I even learned the Spanish word for faith. If you want to know, read the book, because you don't want me to tell you because that would be a spoiler alert.

 

I recommend reading all the books in this series, they don't have to be read in any order.

The Story of Susannah Dickinson, Alamo Survivor

When asked how many died at the Alamo, many would answer that everyone did. While it’s true that all fighting on the side of Texas independence perished, there were survivors, all women and children and one slave. The only white woman (the rest were of Mexican descent) was Susannah Dickinson, along with her daughter Angelina. Susannah had followed her husband, Almaron, to Mexican Texas in 1831. They had married two years before when Susannah was just fifteen. She never learned to read or write.

 

She and the other women hid in the sacristy of the church, one of the surviving buildings in the mission and what we now think of as the Alamo. Her husband died, but Mexican General Santa Anna found them and spared their lives, sending them to Sam Houston with $2 each and a blanket.

 

She married again the following year but divorced him almost immediately on the grounds of cruelty. She married a third time the following year and was married for five years until her husband died of alcoholism. A fourth marriage occurred in 1847, but she divorced again in 1857, this time allegedly because she was having an affair. That same year, she married for a fifth time. This marriage lasted until her death in 1883.

 

The ring in A Promise Engraved is based on a cat’s eye ring supposedly given to Angelina by William Travis before the battle. Angelina was Susannah’s only child. She married and had three children, but that marriage ended in divorce. She gave the ring to a man she’d become involved with in New Orleans. She married again and had one more child but died in 1869 from a uterine hemorrhage.

 

Today there are many descendants of Susannah Dickinson. If you visit the Susannah Dickinson house in Austin, you’ll see a quilt that is signed by many of her living descendants.

"Stranded on Sparrow" by Rachel Skatvold is a tale of "rags to riches". I really liked this story, it kept me turning the pages. I can't wait to read the next book. I think this story would be enjoyable even if you haven't read the other books in the series.  There are characters from the previous story but again I think the story is easy to follow.  I love Nan,  and Zachary Nolan. I would love to know these two characters in real life. I really loved the ending, it was twice the blessings.

When I first saw the beautiful purple shade of the cover for Stranded on Sparrow, I knew I wanted to dedicate the book to my older sister, Jenny. Purple is her favorite color and like the main character in my book, Jenny is a talented photographer. She has taken most of my author photos and also our family photos every year. She has a good eye for choosing the right lighting and pose to perfectly complement the people she’s photographing. When my youngest son was a toddler, no professional photographer could persuade him to smile for a picture, except Jenny.

Besides her photography, Jenny was a positive role model for me growing up. She taught me how to be independent, comfortable in my own skin, and willing to try new things. She was also the person who taught me how to do my makeup. Similar to Lia in my book, Jenny’s adventurous and spunky personality makes her a fun person to be with. Through funny movie quotes, inside jokes between us and much more, she always manages to make me laugh when we are together. I am blessed to have a big sister like her.

This book is also inspired by a verse from Mathew 10:29-31. The verse says, “What is the price of two sparrows—one copper coin? But not a single sparrow can fall to the ground without your Father knowing it. And the very hairs on your head are all numbered. So don’t be afraid; you are more valuable to God than a whole flock of sparrows.”

There is a song my mom used to sing at church when I was a child that still encourages me called, “His Eye is on the Sparrow.” It is comforting to know our Heavenly Father takes such good care of His creation and cares even more for us. Things will go wrong in life but we can have peace knowing God is in control and never abandons His children.

The Traveling Prayer Shawl is actually a tribute to the wonderful women I’ve had the pleasure of making shawls with for the last ten plus years. We have a group that has remained faithful though some have had to leave, and new faces have joined. I thought this would be a book where there would be several points of view, sort of like how it is when we meet one Saturday per month. I even asked the girls when this idea began to churn if they could give me some character ideas.

 

Then one morning this scene came to me and wouldn’t leave. I wrote it out and sent it to my critique group. They thought I might be on to something.

 

Follow that with one of my prayer shawl girls asking if I was still interested in a character idea. Of course I said yes, and she handed me a fully fleshed out supporting character—Dericka.

 

I hadn’t planned on anything romantic but apparently my characters had other ideas. This story couldn’t get itself written fast enough.

 

The cherry on top was when another of my prayer shawl girls shared about a pattern her grandmother had designed that was published back in the 1960’s. With her permission, I include that pattern at the end of the book—an actual prayer shawl to crochet.

 

You will also see a prayer that is included with the shawl in the book. That is the same prayer that is given with each shawl from our Needles of Hope group. It was written by my dear friend, Pastor Lori Brown and used with her permission.

 

Crocheting is a relaxing craft for me and one I came to only a few years ago. My sweet grandmother tried to teach me to crochet, then gently suggested I stick with knitting. Ha! But my husband’s cousin came to visit and accepted the challenge, finally helping me to see what had been so elusive. Now I prefer it to knitting.

 

Though The Traveling Prayer Shawl is a stand-alone and not like my other books, I am currently working on another stand-alone split-time and have included the first chapter at the end of the book. Hope you will enjoy it and that you will try out my friend CeCe’s grandmother’s prayer shawl pattern.

"Taming Julia" by Jodie Wolfe was a great book from start to finish. I don't think I have ever read a more entertaining book about how two very different people come together.  I really think a few things the book was kinda of comical, (misunderstanding between the two main characters), This is a book about forgiveness and learning to accept someone just the way they are. I liked that the Gospel was shared in this book without be preachy, I think readers that like clean reads would like like this book even if they don't like to read Christian fiction. The characters are just like "real people". There are church characters that are so unchristian like that makes me what to jump into the book and say "Why are you like this." But it is all explain in the end. ""GREAT BOOK"

I love mail-order bride stories, so I wondered what would happen if a pastor advertised for a genteel woman and the opposite showed up instead. I thought I could further complicate things by having the couple marry by proxy before she even arrives. Just that scenario alone made for a fun story to write.

 

My heroine, Jules Walker moved to Kansas from Texas to be a mail-order bride, even though she didn’t know what that was at the time. For most of her adult life, she’s helped her brother track outlaws in Texas as part of his job as a deputy US Marshal.

 

As part of the story, she has to come to terms with a traumatic event in her past. I won’t share more so I don’t spoil it for you, but I needed somewhere in Texas for this incident to take place. Because my husband’s aunt and uncle live in Texas, they were a wealth of resources when it came to accurately describing the area. One place in particular is called the Narrows and it’s situated close to them, but it’s on private property.

 

A couple years ago, I had the opportunity to travel and visit them. We received special permission to go on the private ranch and see the Narrows. It’s an unexpected area with sharp limestone rocks, and a deep cavern carved out by the Blanco River. Most times, it’s a sleepy waterway, but when the area has a flash flood, water rushes through the cavern and often to the top. When this happens, you can hear the water gushing from far away.

 

I so enjoyed being able to see the area first-hand. There are places where the water is shallow and others that are extremely deep pools. It has such a distinct beauty. At some point I hope to use this setting in another book.

 

That’s a small snapshot into how Taming Julia came to life. I hope you’ll enjoy the story of two unlikely people who are thrown together.

"All That the Locusts Have Eaten: God’s Redemption Through Loss and Heartache" by Chuck Carr is a true story about all the loses and joy that the author has endured in his life.  This book help me ( I knew already) with letting me know that I'm not alone in suffering a loss of an loved one and depression. 

 

I encourage every Christian and Non-believer to read this book to see that even through sufferings and tragic happens ,joy can come again. 

I like how the author divides the chapters the way he does.  I really related to the chapters on depression. I think readers that have never dealt with depression would benefit every if the depression chapters are all they read. 

I am glad that the author didn't try to make his life seem as it was all peaches and cream but was honestly truthful with his feelings.

As a former youth pastor, Chuck Carr has influenced hundreds of people throughout his life. Author of The Convergence, Navigating Grief, All That the Locusts Have Eaten, and Wonders In The Deep, he desires to help others live effectively despite hardships, as his testimony proves that sufferings can be changed into blessings. Losing a spouse in 2008, he strives to help those hurting from the same pain. While working on the family dairy farm, a life altering accident in 2018 left him with a traumatic brain injury, and his vision and life goal has been refocused to help others heal from devastating traumas. Now remarried to a woman of shared life goals, he has chosen to live with purpose despite his injuries, being an inspiration to others. "A Sprinkle in Time" by  Dana Mentink is the second book of thew series. It is a cute story but it is a mystery as well. I was really wanting a milkshake why reading this book but I drink my green tea instead.  What does ice cream and murder have in common, nothing unless you are Trindad and is owner of Shimmy and Shake Shop.  This book has three exes of the same man becoming friends and how does a name from the past fit into the story. I know and I bet you want to know so I encourage you to get "A Sprinkle in Time" by  Dana Mentink and found out for yourself and don't forget the first book "Pint of No Return.

Who wouldn’t want to visit Upper Sprocket? Sure there’s the odd corpse that turns up, but it’s a charming place, complete with a rail riders excursion business and the Shimmy and Shake Shop, run by the determined Trinidad Jones. It’s fall in Sprocket and the locals are hosting a series of Alpenfest events with everything from yodeling performances to sausage cook offs. Papa Luis, Trinidad’s grandfather is happy to shuttle people around in his classic Chevy Bel Air until a body turns up in his truck. But other than that, Sprocket is an idyllic place with a newly opened train car inn operated by Bonnie, one of three women who were married at various times to the same rapscallion of a man.
