"Toby’s Troubles" by Carole Brown Booktour and GiveAway

About the Book

Book Title: Toby’s Troubles
Author: Carole Brown
Genre: Romantic Mystery, Cozy Mystery
Release date: July 1, 2018

Everyone loves Toby Gibson. A co-owner of Undiscovered Treasures, a unique shop of antiques, collectables and junk, Toby is friendly, generous to a fault, the director of the local plays in Appleton and supports his church’s youth functions. But the minute his sister, Caroline and her new husband, take off for their honeymoon, a “ghost” begins to haunt the shop—or maybe it’s just an intruder. If so, Toby has no idea for what he is looking. To add to his troubles, he suspects Amy, not only is bidding for the property he’s wanted forever, but is in love with him. And he’s not interested. Amy Sanderson who owns the only flower shop in Appleton—Bloomin’ Life—is drawn into capturing Toby’s “ghost” when her own business is damaged by a destructive intruder. Having loved Toby from childhood, she’s more than willing to join forces with him. But she has no interest in being his best friend or like a sister to him. And if she has to resort to schemes of outbidding him at his frequent auction attendences to get his attention, then so be it. She can be just as stubborn as the man who’s determined to ignore her love. In between the break-ins, destruction of property, thefts and personal competitions against each other, Amy and Toby work together to find the thief who seems so determined to find a valuable item, he’ll stop at nothing.

My Review:
"Toby’s Troubles" by Carole Brown is the fourth book in the "Appleton WV Romantic Mystery" series.

"Toby's Troubles" is a love story in the middle of a mystery with a community theater thrown into the mix. I know this sounds like a lot but it is really a great story and I love how it all comes together.

This novel is filled with twists and turns. At one point I thought I had I figured who one of the "Ghosts" was but it turns out I was wrong.

I loved the ending and how the community theater made this book a hit for me. The ending was fantastic, I really was surprised, as I think most readers would be unless they are really good detectives.

This is also a story about two childhood friends, but one wants to be more than friends.

I was given a complimentary copy by the author and Celebrate Lit. These opinions are my own.

Guest Post from Carole Brown

Antique Shops, A Thief, the Community Theater, and Love
Toby’s Troubles, Book Four from the Appleton, West Virginia Romantic Mysteries series I knew when I wrote this book who Toby was. But capturing Toby’s personality and presenting it in the right way, was a challenge for me. Readers can see his teasing, fun-loving character when he labels the person who’s breaking into his shop as a ghost. But Toby is also serious, smart and successful. The side of him who has had plenty of girl friends, but who’s never gotten serious with any of them, is prominent too. But I didn’t want him to seem frivolous and uncaring, because he isn’t that. With a focus on his interests, love has never—as of yet—been a primary concern, so when Amy Sanderson strolls into his life, she turns out to be his confidant in the time of his troubles. The question is: can she not only have a place in his life as a best friend, but also capture his heart? Let’s talk about: Antique Shops Who doesn’t love a place filled with valuable items, interesting history, and hard-to-find items? Undiscovered Treasures—a shop of antiques, collectibles and junk—could be described as the town gathering place. Everyone loves browsing there. Deciding on such a place for the business of brother and sister, Toby and Caroline Gibson, was a fun choice. From grandfather clocks to unique shaped vases, it’s a shop where treasure hunters could just find what they’re looking for. A Thief: There are way too many new people visiting Appleton, West Virginia, so how is someone like Toby supposed to guess what the thief is after? The thief definitely knows what he’s looking for, just not where. He’s tall, thin and a fast runner, especially when escaping across a rooftop. But then, maybe it’s not a new person in town. Maybe the thief is Toby’s part time help, who has a mystery all of his own. It makes things interesting, and a bit terrifying for everyone. The Community Theater: One of Toby’s loves is directing and overseeing the community theater. Caroline Gibson writes some of the plays, the actors are usually taken from the West Virginia area, and all proceeds go to charities. But when their main actors, of the current play, elope and leave the play desolate, someone has to step in to fill the gaps. Toby struggles with decisions he doesn’t want to make. Love Toby is smart, funny, and a resourseful man. He’s also busy with his community theater activities and his business. Known as the one man in town who’s not interested, at the current time, in getting married, his reputation of loving and leaving is in danger of being wrecked by one small woman. Can she sabotage his well-laid plans and help him realize it’s now or never? Could it be the time when real love is captured by two people, even when one of them seems doomed to ignore what God’s put in their hearts? I love creating characters. Developing them into real people with real desires, moods, troubles

My Review:
"Chasing Embers" Heart Ranch, Book 2 by Rachel Skatvold is a wonderful story of a second chance at love and faith. I recommend reading "Escaping Reality" first because "Chasing Embers" is a follow up. I suppose you would like the story without reading them in order but knowing the background story makes "Chasing Embers" a better story in my opinion.

"Chasing Embers" is a book that pulled at my heart strings. It is a story filled with twists and turns and one scene literally made me want to cry. This book is fiction but I could see this story being played out in real life, especially with the danger of true life wildfires that we are hearing about in the news.

This story shows that dreams can come true if we keep dreaming them long enough.

I was given a complimentary copy by the author and Celebrate Lit. These opinions are my own.

Guest Post from Rachel

Chasing Embers is a sequel I have been excited to write since the release of Escaping Reality over two years ago. To be honest, while writing book one, I thought it would just be a standalone story and not part of a series. However, Logan’s strong-willed little sister, Belle, was determined to have her own story and I’m thrilled that she is finally getting one! One of the theme verses from Chasing Embers is Ephesians 3:20, which says, “Now all glory to God, who is able, through his mighty power at work within us, to accomplish infinitely more than we might ask or think.” In the story, the characters go through some trials that seem impossible to overcome. In order to keep their loved ones and the ranch safe, the Hart family must cling tightly to their faith and trust that God always keeps his promises. The events of the story also serve as a reminder that God can do mighty things through us if we allow him to. Chasing Embers is a heartwarming tale of lost love, second chances and choosing to love even when it is difficult. Be prepared to laugh, cry and rejoice with Belle and Colton as you read their love story. To find out more about Chasing Embers by Rachel Skatvold, read the summary above.

"A Light So Lovely: The Spiritual Legacy of Madeleine L'Engle, Author of A Wrinkle in Time" by Sarah Arthur

Madeleine L'Engle's A Wrinkle in Time has captured the imagination of millions - from literary sensation to timeless classic and now a major motion picture starring Oprah Winfrey, Reese Witherspoon, Storm Reid, and Mindy Kaling. A Light So Lovely tells the story of the woman at the center of it all - her imagination, her faith, her pattern of defying categories, and what readers today can learn from her legacy.
Bestselling and beloved author Madeleine L'Engle, Newbery winner for A Wrinkle in Time, was known the world round for her imaginative spirit and stories. She was also known to spark controversy - too Christian for some, too unorthodox for others. Somewhere in the middle was a complex woman whose embrace of paradox has much to say to a new generation of readers today.
A Light So Lovely paints a vivid portrait of this enigmatic icon's spiritual legacy, starting with her inner world and expanding into fresh reflections of her writing for readers today. Listen in on intimate interviews with L'Engle's literary contemporaries such as Philip Yancey and Luci Shaw, L'Engle's granddaughter Charlotte Jones Voiklis, and influential fans such as Makoto Fujimura, Nikki Grimes, and Sarah Bessey, as they reveal new layers to the woman behind the stories we know and love. A vibrant, imaginative read, this book pulls back the curtain to illuminate L'Engle's creative journey, her persevering faith, and the inspiring, often unexpected ways these two forces converged.
For anyone earnestly searching the space between sacred and secular, miracle and science, faith and art, come and find a kindred spirit and trusted guide in Madeleine - the Mrs Whatsit to our Meg Murry - as she sparks our imagination anew.

My Review:
"A Light So Lovely" by Sarah Arthur is a must read for Madeleine L'Engle. It is a book that really enlightens her fans to her life and her Christian faith.

It tells of her struggles and her faults and her strengths.

I remember reading "A Winkle In Time" for a college class, but I don't really remember too much about the book,  but after reading this book I have requested all five books in this series from the library. I also want to read her other books. I learned so much about Madeleine L'Engle. I had no idea that she had written so many books, both fiction and non-fiction.

I was surprised to learn "A Wrinkle In Time" was on the list of books banned.

This book has me wanting to see the movie that just came out.

I think I enjoyed and understood the book a little more since I listen to someone reading aloud on audio and followed along with the book. I felt the book was a little too much like a text book for college students, thus the reason I downloaded the audio version. I think I would have enjoyed and learned as much without the audio, just would had taken me longer.

I received a complimentary copy of this book for Handlebar Publishing on behalf of Zondervan. These opinions are my own.

 My Review
What started out as a tool to bless and encourage an aunt quickly became an idea to bless as many people all over the world as possible. "Everyday Uplifting you", is a book filled with daily nuggets to jumpstart your day. After watching an aunt broken due to the many obstacles she had been facing, Val decided to do something special for her and started writing nuggets for each day to show her aunt how much she is loved and remind her of the blessing that she is. The book is designed to bless, motivate, uplift and challenge you with powerful nuggets to empower you from the inside out.

"Everyday Uplifting you" by Val Newton Knowles is a book with 365 beautiful thoughts, one for each day of the year. Since I got the book in August I have only read August's thoughts but I have really been excited to read each daily nugget first thing every morning. Some of the thoughts are more spiritual and some are just great thoughts. I have shared some of these nuggets on my Facebook wall. The quotes are dated and separated by the month and real easy to follow. I have the kindle book and when I open up the kindle app on my phone, it opens to this book. So that makes it even easier for me.

Here, are just two of the daily nuggets which I have read "Seek to pattern your life after Jesus Christ. He is the only one who can truly show us how to live. " and 'The beauty of friendship is the uniqueness in each individual. Be you always. It's what we love.'

I recommend getting this book as a gift for someone that needs a reminder that they are loved or do as I do and use this as a way to lift yourself and have a positive thought to start your day.

My Review:
"The Hope Jar " (The Prayer Jars, Book 1) by Wanda E. Brunstetter is a story of betrayal, hope and forgiveness and love.

If you like other's books written by Wanda Brunstetter, you'll love "The Hope Jar ".

The story is about an older Amish couple who accepts a stranger as their granddaughter and the stranger who comes to love them.

While doing chores she finds a jar with prayers written on scraps of paper and it helps to bring her to God.
Meanwhile, the real granddaughter is thinking the grandparents don't want to meet.

While reading, "The Hope Jar" I was hoping to found out the writer of these prayers and why. Guess, that will be revealed in another book.

I don't think I have a favorite character in this book, because I feel that each character in this book is important to the story and not used as an extra person.

I am eagerly awaiting book 2 in this series.

Oh, this story has a love triangle too. Who gets the girl?

This is a wonderful story of Amish meets the English.

Once again, Wanda E. Brunstetter has written a book that touches the heart and makes her readers believe in the power of love and forgiveness.

I was given a complimentary copy by the author and Celebrate Lit. These opinions are my own

Click here to purchase your copy!

My Review:
I have mixed feelings about this book. The topic of the book is a hard subject to deal with, but I liked the story. The mixed feelings is because of the way the story is told. It is told by Ian, the American in North Korea who is in prison for taking a photo of a young homeless boy. Just my opinion but the story just didn't make me want to hurry and reach the end, I did want to see if Ian was released and sent home, but it wasn't "an I have to know right now" curiosity thrill that I get when reading a book.

Ok, I know this is probably strange for a book review, but my favorite chapter in the whole book  is chapter 49. It was this chapter that made the book for me. I am going to include the post I posted on my Facebook wall from this chapter,
I am claiming this was written for me. ( and all Christians ) I know it is a quote from a book but I believe God had it written for me and it is no mistake that I am reading it now and it spoke to me deep in my soul and heart.
"You are His child,.... And whatever trials you've been forced to endure, He's been there beside you. He's the strength that whispers hope to your weary soul when you feel you can't go on. He's the courage that wells up inside you when you're confronted with evil. He's the friend who whispers peace to you when the darkness tempts you toward despair. He is your rescue. your shield, and your refuge, ......He's been right there beside you all the time."
"Out Of North Korea" by Alana Terry.
The strange part is that I am going to say read chapter 49, even if you don't read the entire book.

If you have read other books by Alana Terry, you will get to read more of Grandma's Lucy's prayers in "Out Of North Korea".

Without giving a spoiler alert, I would really like a follow up to this story. There are a few questions left unanswered in my mind such as, what happens later and what about the girlfriend? I want to read more about Hee-Man.

I recommend this book to anyone that wants to get a glimpse of what an American prisoner goes through in a foreign country.

This is a story about faith.

I was given a complimentary copy by the author and Celebrate Lit. The opinions are my own.

About the Author

Alana is a pastor’s wife, homeschooling mom, self-diagnosed chicken lady, and Christian suspense author. Her novels have won awards from Women of Faith, Book Club Network, Grace Awards, Readers’ Favorite, and more. Alana’s passion for social justice, human rights, and religious freedom shines through her writing, and her books are known for raising tough questions without preaching. She and her family live in rural Alaska where the northern lights in the winter and midnight sun in the summer make hauling water, surviving the annual mosquito apocalypse, and cleaning goat stalls in negative forty degrees worth every second.

Guest Post from Alana Terry

Have you seen in the news that the leaders of North and South Korea have both publicly stated their willingness to promote peace on the Korean peninsula? It was certainly a historic moment, and this part of the world has earned its place in global headlines.
My interest in North Korea, however, goes back over a decade, when as a young mother I received a prayer burden for the people of North Korea. Fast-forward to five years ago when my debut novel was released. The Beloved Daughter follows the life of a young girl who is sent to prison camp because of her father’s Christian faith. In addition to winning several awards, The Beloved Daughter gave an expression to my prayer burden to see North Korea free to worship the one true God.
Out of North Korea is unique among my other titles because it’s the first story that focuses on an American in North Korea. Ian McAllister is captured and held in a Pyongyang prison because of a photograph he took of a young homeless boy. I hope the message leaves you as inspired and encouraged as I was when I was writing it.

My Review:
"Ties that Blind" by Chautona Havig is the third and final book in the (Sight Unseen) series.  I guess a reader could enjoy it as a stand alone but I really recommend reading the books in order.  I say this because "Ties that Blind" bring the other two books into this book.

I understand that series end but I am really disappointed for this one to end, I know the mystery has been solved but I want to read more of these characters.

Some of the ending really surprised me, while at the same time I guessed some of the answers.

This book is suspense but it does have a spiritual theme throughout the story.

This series makes this reader rethink the want to be able to forget the bad memories because the bad as well as the good memories are what makes us who we are.

These books are about faith, truly finding out what love is and finding our true identify in Christ.

I recommend this series to anyone who likes Christian suspense and wants something that is not your normal read, I mean who really wakes up and discovers they can't remember anything about themselves unless they have been involved in a tragic event. Well, I guess in a way these characters have been involved in something tragic, but we don't know until the end.

I really like  how the other two characters from the first two books team up with Simon, the character from this story to help each other.

I was given a complimentary copy by the author and Celebrate Lit. These opinions are my own.

Guest Post from Chautona

What Does It All Mean, Anyway?

“So why is this series called ‘Sight Unseen’ if it’s about people who lose their memories? Why the vision references?” I can’t pretend I wanted to answer her question. She isn’t the first to ask, and I doubt she’ll be the last. I tried to explain. Look, it’s a valid question. Originally, the first book was called From the Cinders, and if it had remained a stand-alone book, it still would be. But when I finished with another person waking up to no memories and a hint that something sinister might be behind it all, I had to change it to fit two books—no, three! Recall. Rewind. Refresh. I liked those titles. But that still didn’t give me the name of a series. I kept studying. Tried again. I read what would become None So Blind three times in a row, if I recall correctly. And as I read it, a theme emerged. Ella Weeks hadn’t been blind to her faults even before her memory loss. Even her husband hadn’t been, despite his obvious love for her. But those around her had been blind to her awareness of those faults—to her silent cries for help in overcoming them.

Will Not See emerged with a similar theme.

Vikki had a past that she hid from and refused to acknowledge. And even as those around her drew closer to provide support, she still managed to block out all that she found frightening—even physically shutting down and shutting out life. So, when it came time to plan the final book in the series, the one that would now tie together everything that had happened, I knew I wanted something that also fit with the other titles. And one night it came to me. Ties That Blind. So often our ties to people blind us to their faults—to the destructive influences they have in our lives. And Simon Prescott will learn that lesson in a rather lonely, horrible way.

The Sight Unseen series reminds us of what Paul said in Corinthians.

Now we see through dark glasses… we can’t really make it all out. But with the Lord, when we’re truly with Him in eternity, we’ll see things as clearly as we do when we are face to face. And that’s what faith is all about, right? It’s the “substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.” When we “buy in” to the Lord Jesus, we’re taking it all in faith. We’re trusting in Him, “Sight Unseen,” just as the characters in this series do with every element of their lives. I hope their journeys bless you as they have me as I wrote them.
