"A Gateway to Hope" byE. C. Jackson

Twenty-one-year-old Neka is a bit of an introvert, she also happens to be stunningly beautiful. When she discovers her friend James is about to be dumped, she sees the perfect opportunity to escape from her quiet life. Can she summon the courage to leave it all behind? James Copley comes from a ruthless family. It's rubbed off. Years ago, he disengaged from his brother's smear campaign, but now his father has offered him an ultimatum, "Get married or lose your seat at the table." Plotting to stamp his design on the family business, he proposes to a woman, even though he doesn't love her. But his carefully laid plans start to unravel when she leaves him on the day she's due to meet his family. Could years of planning his comeback vanish with her departure? A possible solution comes in an unexpected form: Neka. She's not only a friend, but the daughter of his benefactor. And she's right there, offering to support him. But will her support stretch to marriage? He attempts to win her over to his plan but collides with her powerful father who wants to leverage the situation for his own gain. In their fight for survival and love, they are forced to face some uncomfortable truths. Can they overcome thwarted dreams and missed chances to find true love, or does forcing destiny's hand only lead to misery?
"A Gateway to Hope" by E. C. Jackson is a great book about what a friend will do for another friend. This is a clean love story with a twist. James must get marry to be part of his family business but his fiancee dumps his the night before he is supposed to introduce her to his family so a friend agrees to take her place.

I think I enjoyed this story mostly because it takes place in St.Louis, a city that I have been to many times and it mentions the St.Louis Ark, a landmark that I have seen and it mentions the St Louis Cardinals, I have been to a game that they played.  It is always fun to read about places and things that a reader knows as it makes the story more real to us.

Through Neka doesn't tell anyone of her plan to help James and leaves a note for her parents to find, she does remain true to her Christian belief and lifestyle.

I was given a complementary copy by the author and Celebrate Lit. These opinions are my own.

"Secrets & Wishes" by Kathleen Rouser

Stone Creek, Michigan, April, 1901 — Maggie Galloway and Thomas Harper clash after their sons collide in a fistfight. Both widowed, they’re each doing their best as single-parents. Outgoing Maggie has dreams for a home of her own and a business to provide for her son as she searches for God’s path for her life as a widow. Reserved Thomas struggles to establish his new pharmacy and take care of his four rambunctious children, while wondering how a loving God could take his beloved wife. When Thomas becomes deathly ill, Maggie is recruited to nurse him back to health. Taking the children in hand, as well, is more than she bargained for, but she is drawn to help the grieving family. Both nurse and patient find themselves drawn to each other but promptly deny their feelings. A baking contest sponsored by the Silver Leaf Flour Company brings former beau, Giles Prescott, back into Maggie’s life. When Giles offers Maggie a position at their test kitchen in Chicago, he hints that, along with assuring her a good job, it will allow them to possibly rekindle their relationship. But then a charlatan comes to town, and tragedy soon follows. Maggie and Thomas discover the miracle potions he hawks aren’t so harmless when an epidemic hits Stone Creek. Thomas and Maggie realize they must work together to save lives. Maggie finds herself caught up in battles within and without—the battle to help the townsfolk in the midst of illness and chicanery, and the battle to know which man—Thomas or Giles—deserves to win her heart.

"Secrets & Wishes" by Kathleen Rouser is a really wonderful story of a widow and a widower trying to survive and raise their children.  The sparks fly between the two because of differences of how to raise children and how to run a business.

"Secrets & Wishes" by Kathleen Rouser is a fun read.

I recommend"Secrets & Wishes" by Kathleen Rouser if you like clean love stories with a little bit of history mixed in.

How can Maggie found out what God's will is for her, should she nurse Thomas back to health and is her winning the baking contest, a second chance at love with an old beau?

Thomas struggles with how a supposedly loving God could take his wife and leave him with four children.

"A DIM REFLECTION" by ALEIGHA C. ISRAEL

William Caverly can't seem to understand the unsettling feeling that has been nagging him for far too long. Memories of a baby sister are forever haunting his waking hours, and as he sleeps at night, he is repeatedly awakened by nightmares, confusing ones that he'd rather forget. His baby sister died. He saw her little body laid to rest beside their mother. But that doesn’t explain the dim remembrance he has of an event that happened not too long after that.

Charlotte Porter's days are full and busy as she diligently teaches her young art students at her mother's boarding school, and tries desperately to stay away from an annoying suitor. Painting has been her passion and dream ever since she could hold a brush, but lately she has begun to question her mission and calling in life. What is her real purpose? And why does she know so little about her father, who supposedly died before she was born?

William thinks he's discovered the hidden link that has kept him from his sister for over fifteen years. But then she's kid-napped, leaving William no choice except to find her and get her back. Once and for all.

Living in the Israel household, it’s guaranteed there’s an adventure waiting around every corner!

"A Dim Reflection" by ALEIGHA C. ISRAEL is the second book the "A Light for Christ" Collection and I recommend reading the books in order to get the full impact of these wonderful books.

These books are really one love story about Christ's love for us but in between the pages there is also a love story between man and women.

"A Dim Reflection" picks up  many years later from where "A Higher Ransom" ends and is a fast and exciting read.

These books have a full cast of characters that really readers either love or hate.

This book ends on a much happier note than the first book, but not all the characters end their life happy.

This book is about forgiveness and knowing what real love is!

This series really shows what real faith in Christ is like.

This series  ( at least the first two books, I haven't read the third one yet,) is one that I think all christians should read and hopefully know that faith in Christ really is the best way to live even when it appears otherwise.

I am anxiously wanting to read the third one and I will soon.

Love’s Rescue" is a modern retelling of the biblical book of Rahab.  It is a fast read and I throughly enjoyed reading it.   This story shows that sometimes what other sees and think is  true is really just a false picture of what is really happening.

I love how the author has taken two different eras, WW11 and Biblical,  of time and two different locations and woven therm together to bring this sweet and clean romance to us.

The thought that keeps running through my mind as I write this review is, I am glad Simon Harlow saw into the heart of Rolande Bisset and realized that she wasn't what everyone thought she was.

I was given a complimentary copy by the author and Celebrate Lit. These opinions are my own.

More from Linda

Dear Reader:
Love’s Rescue is a modern retelling of the biblical book of Rahab. I set the story in Paris during the last weeks of the German occupation of France during WWII. While researching the book, I read numerous memoirs and interviews of folks who lived through the occupation. Two aspects discussed time and time again were rationing and the difficulty in getting food. People with any amount of land at all planted produce to supplement the meager supply in the shops. If they were fortunate and an egg was available, it would be fried to a runny consistency and poured over the top of the dish.
Here is a simple recipe for Ratatouille:
Ingredients
1 whole white onion
1 large eggplant
1 large zucchini
1 bell pepper
2 medium tomatoes
2 large cloves garlic
2 sprigs thyme
2 T Olive oil
Salt & Pepper

Instructions
  • Peel garlic cloves. Smash with end of knife, then cut into a small dice.
  • Cut onions, bell pepper, and tomatoes into a medium dice.
  • Chop the eggplant and zucchini into 1” cubes.
  • In a large saucepan or pot, warm olive oil to coat the bottom of the pan. Warm over low heat. Add the onion to the pot and cook until tender – about five minutes.
  • Add garlic and saute for about 30 seconds.
  • Add remaining vegetables to the pot.
  • Add a generous pinch of salt and a light pinch of pepper.
  • Add the thyme.
  • Cover the saucepan or pot with a lid and cook over medium-low heat for approximately 40 minutes, until all the vegetables are tender and there is little liquid in the pot.
  • Serve on your favorite platter.

About the Book

Uniquely Common Cover
Book: Uniquely Common
Author: Caryl McAdoo
Genre: Christian Historical Romance
Release Date: April 4, 2019
Steel sharpens steel, but will its sparks ignite unfailing love?
Instead of living a pampered life on the civilized east coast with a new husband, rejection compels Christina Adams westward with her widowed brother and his two daughters. Harboring ulterior motives, Ethan Cord, the man her brother hires to accompany the family, is more a match for her, and he appears almost perfect, but how could she possibly trust her instincts about him when she’d been so wrong about her previous fiancĂ©? Will her past ruin her future?

"Uniquely Common" by Caryl McAdoo is a clean and sweet fun read. I love how the characters are "real people" with pasts that are not the best, but after coming to Jesus, their lives are changed.

" Uniquely Common" has a little bit of matchmaking that is quite obvious to the one being set up.

I have only read this one book in the "Lockets and Lace" series, but I believe there are 19 books and Want to read them all if I ever get my to be read list done!  Each book can be read as a stand alone title.  If the other books in the series leave you with a feeling that all is right with the world and a song in your heart like "Uniquely Common" by Caryl McAdoo does than I say this series is a hit.

The ending makes you want to get started reading the next book by Caryl McAdoo because it is a sweet cliffhanger for at least one of the characters. But, it is a sweet cliffhanger!

I was given a complimentary copy by the author and Celebrate Lit. These opinions are my own.

About the Author
CarylMcAdooAward-winning author Caryl McAdoo prays her story brings God glory, and her best-selling novels—over forty published—delight Christian readers around the world. The prolific writer also enjoys singing the new songs the Lord gives her—listen to a few at YouTube. Sharing four children and eighteen grandsugars with Ron, her high-school-sweetheart-husband of fifty years, she lives in the woods south of Clarksville, seat of Red River County in far Northeast Texas. The McAdoos wait expectantly for God to open the next door.

More from Caryl

I’m so excited about this year’s Lockets and Lace story! I’ve fallen in love with its characters. Asher and his sister Christina, his girls Samantha and Patricia, and his friend, Ethan Cord is certainly a man’s man though he has a checkered past to overcome.
His wife dies in childbirth, leaving him with two little girls, then when his parents pass, too, what’s to tie Asher Adams to New York?
His younger sister Christina is about to be settled into her new life, married and well cared for, so there’s nothing holding the wine merchant back from his dreams of owning a vineyard in the Napa Valley. He decides a new life in the west is the best thing for him and his daughters.
Then at the last minute, the family is turned upside down when the rogue engaged to Christina dumps her and calls the wedding off. Asher’s already sold the brownstone. She suddenly has nowhere to go and no one to watch over her if he leaves.
She never wanted to, but he insists her only choice is to go with them, accompany him and her nieces and make her new life in California . . . and he knows the perfect man for her, too!
One thing I love about this book is that as it draws to its end in Saint Joseph, Missouri, a new young woman is introduced, Remi, and her book—my May ‘Prairie Roses Collection’ story REMI—continues with the Adams family and segues into a new romance!
I hope readers will love that as well, praying my story gives God glory!

This is a great book of encouragement to remind us that God has gifts for each of us. It reminds us not to be afraid to step out in faith to use the gifts that God gives us to use because the gifts are for the whole body of Christ and not just ourselves.
I really like that the author uses personal stories to show that she really does know what she is talking about and that the book is written in easy to follow language, not in a text book style. There are also suggestions after every chapter to help the reader discover their gifts and how to use them.

I think the chapter on fear was personally written for me at this time in my life as I am dealing with letting go of fear in areas that has been lived with that damaging emotion to long. I thing my favorite quote in the whole book is " However, fear does not get the final word if God has anything to do with it."
After reading this book, I am on the hunt to find what my Spiritual gifts are!
I was given a complimentary copy by the author and Celebrate Lit. These opinions are my own.

More from T.H. Meyer

A Purposeful Life & the One Thing that Trumps Fear
Most my life, I’ve been afraid of failure. However, I might’ve been even more afraid of success. For too many years, I was immobile because the magnitude and pressures, or vulnerability, required to do what God had called me too, paralyzed me.
I’ve written a lot about this. I even originally named my blog, The Art of Fear Not. I decided on that title because God always told His people to not fear just before sending them into battle.
Armies Against Us
Even though His people were informed that they’d win the skirmishes, most times they were still afraid. I can’t say I blame them. They were up against sword-wielding armies that were willing to cut a man down and spill blood.
We may not have the same scenario, but we don’t need the threat of hand-to-hand combat to experience fear. Our own thoughts can attack us with feelings just as real a danger. I know mine did.
The enemy uses fear to hide us or blind us from our God-purpose. He’d prefer to lock us up and throw away the key. The enemy attempts to bully us. His demonic realm would prefer to rip out our vocal cords or cut off our hand from writing or burden us with every insecurity until we began to believe our worth was lower than the dirt itself rather than seeing us live our God-given purpose.
But bear in mind, when you’re in bondage, suppressed, oppressed, silenced, or held back, it also holds back blessings too—our blessings through your God-given contribution of gifts and talents.
Fighting Back
Several years ago, I decided to tackle my own issue with fear, head on. I looked in the mirror and met with God on my internal mess. And I also asked questions like, “Was it me or God who wanted to do a such-n-such thing? And if it’s God, why am I hamstrung with fear?”
After spending time in prayer, and laying down a good dose of self-preservation, a clear path emerged. I then decided I’d follow wherever it led. Not that the path was open and wide or easy for traveling. No, this was more of a narrow thicket where I couldn’t see ‘round the next corner—making the journey less about self-reliance and more about placing one steady foot in front of the other.
Don’t get me wrong. Fear didn’t entirely flee on this trek with God. There were times it tried to gore me like daggers from a thorny locust. But instead, I chose to trust and move forward anyway.
I fought back too.
A Warrior’s Call
During that time, anxiety would creep in only for me to replace it with intercession. I meditated on scripture. I bombarded my mind with worship music and reflected on His beautiful handiwork in creation.
I took opportunities to reverse fear into faithful action. I’m sure the devil didn’t take kindly that his demonic attacks turned into prayers, worship, and a yielding to the sword of the Spirit inside my heart. But that’s what fighting does—the good fight—positioning myself for a (God) purposeful life.
But oh how we also need to be each other’s champion for freedom too!
Power & Purpose
I continue to be amazed at the power of prayer. Prayer moves mountains, y’all. And sometimes those mountains are skyscrapers inside us. I’m not perfect at prayer or even at instantly returning to it, but when I finally do—why did I wait so long?
When we receive God’s wisdom, we become bold like lions, warriors ready to rise above insecurities, frailties, or fear and charging into battle in order to advance His kingdom.
I want to live in obedience to Christ, despite trepidation of what it might require of me.
Which also means, I need the Holy Spirit to help me get over myself.
Truth That Sets Free
We all need each of you. We need you to press into your God-purpose. Except, we don’t want to be something you’re not. You should be exactly what God’s called you to be and nothing more. No pressure to run off and save the world.
None of us in this Body of Christ are too small and Lord have mercy, none are too big and important either.
Instead, we pursue our God-purpose whether it’s raising our family or speaking on a stage. Or writing a book called, A Life of Creative Purpose.
And let’s not allow our muddied past to undervalue our worth inside God’s kingdom. I’ve done that. I once disqualified myself for many of God’s ministries because of condemnation and shame. Learn from my mistake.
Truth be told, the spirit of fear is afraid of you—afraid of the Spirit inside you, the same Spirit that sets you free.
Courage Rises to the Top
The enemy knows your God. The ruler of this world attempts to draw away your attention with clanging gongs, hoping you’ll never notice how big God really is.
Scripture says that God’s perfect love casts out fear. And that means, we have to first let God love on us, receiving it. Once we do that (& never stop), courage rises to the top.
Let’s make this a year where we pay attention and live with more intention.
God’s gifted you beautifully unique.
Don’t grow weary of the fight.
What might God be asking of you? How might He be challenging you to change or step out or persevere this year? What are your biggest struggles or hurdles right now?
