BOOK SPOTLIGHT

Both rebels in their own way, Josie and Jerry Patterson must figure out how to keep the other's love...and keep the German enemy at bay.

She has two loves—her skating and Jerry, her husband. But when he returns home looking like a skeleton trying to return to life, she’s scared. What happened in Germany to change a man so much? Has another woman captured his heart?

Jerry has vowed to let Josie live her own glamorous life...especially after what happened in Germany. But when his wife's life is threatened, Jerry realizes he can’t stand by and do nothing. Jerry has to risk all for the very soul and life of himself—Josie.

These two damaged, rebellious people learn the hard way that leaning on God instead of their own selves and abilities is the only true way to love and happiness.

A Flute in the Willows, First Chapter:

Chapter One

1943

Jerry Patterson stared out the yawning black hole in the side of the plane. Seconds to go before he dropped. Night time parachuting was always a risky thing, but the pilot was one of the best who’d keep this baby right on target, lessening the chances he’d have to hit water. Trees were another matter, but with any kind of luck, the landing would go smooth.
Then to meet his contact and move into the German military high life. His pulse revved up. It was a dangerous game he was about to play.

Josie’s face flashed in his mind, and Jerry felt his heart soften. How he loved his tomboy wife. She was a beautiful butterfly dancing on ice, but put her in a social setting, and she was like a wild creature let lose in a maiden aunt’s prim parlor.

Three weeks of marital bliss. It’d been heaven on earth for him. One rapturous day—and night—after another. She’d cried the night before he’d left, but had been strength personified when he’d boarded the train the next morning.

If—no, when—he got home, he’d wrap his arms around her and not let her out of his sight.

Jerry stepped into the hole and dropped rapidly, counting. One thousand...One thousand one...One thousand two... With a jerk he pulled, the parachute opened above him, and he drifted earthward toward his assignment.

Interview

Please tell us from where the idea for this book came.

When I first thought of the idea of three red-headed sisters, it was with the knowledge I wanted to write the first book as a dedication to my mother and her love for her family and me. I also wanted to portray each sister as their own persons, with individual traits, but all of them beautiful and talented in her own way. This second book, A Flute in the Willows, deals with the second daughter, Josie Rayner Patterson, who eloped with Jerry Patterson in the first book.

My mother lived through WWII and from her tales and pictures she shared, I was hooked on the era. Such romantic and swift marriages, clothing, hats, language (slang!), and music! I'm a romantic at heart, so it is easy to see how the WWII Spies series was born. :)

I also was raised on the story of a civilian spy—we knew the man who wrote the book—and it was always suspected that he was that spy. It captured my attention that a person could serve as a spy and never be able to share their service or be recognized as such.

What about your two main protagonists? Please share about them.

Josie's (Josephine Rayner) difference from her two sisters sets her apart. She's more outspoken and strong-willed, more wild in her dreams and actions, more spontaneous and not afraid to tackle the difficult. (A lot like her father). But she's very loyal, very determined in whatever she attempts, and very tender-hearted. She loves fiercely.

Although Jerry hides beneath the exterior wall he's built around himself of cockiness and a devil-may-care attitude, he suffers from the neglect and feeling of being unloved and encouraged from an overbearing father determined to force him to enter into the business Jerry has no desire to enter. He found his soul mate in Josie, and though he doesn't realize it, her family is what he needs to show him the right path to trod.

Why did you choose Germany as a setting?

Germany is at the heart of WWII, so I wanted to show Jerry's ability as a spy, and the cause of his injury and troubled spirit. Setting him within that country, succeeding in preventing the work of another spy, and then returning to the United States, injured both physically and in spirit, sets the story up for the drama in both fighting for his country and Josie.

I heard that one of the main secondary characters is Josie's father, lovingly referred to as Captain Ossie or Papa Ossie. How did you make him relevant to the story?

Love this character (as does most everyone in these books. :) )
Papa Ossie is a strong man who served in WWI, so he has experience with the emotions and symptoms of suffering through war. He's a strong man, wise, the owner of ships and entirely devoted to and protective of his daughters.

Seeing the suffering both Josie and Jerry go through forces him to “be there” for them. Not intrusively, but willingly and lovingly offering encouragement, sharing his advise when asked, providing personal details of his own war experiences, and instructing them spiritually when needed. Papa's advice to Josie in her terror at Jerry's low point is: “You're going to have to be stronger than you've ever been in your life.”

He'd seen, from experience, the effects of PTSD (Post Traumatic Syndrome Disorder) and knew the rough road ahead for his daughter and her husband. A weaker woman than Josie might not have made it through, but given her strong personality, her supportive and caring family...and, of course...the decision she makes to include God in her life, helped Josie ride out the storm.
Without her father in her life, the discipline, the training and the support and understanding he provides to Josie and Jerry, offers to readers the illustration of the importance of being there to those who are in need.

Of the three sisters, do you have a favorite?

I couldn't say for fear of hurt feelings. Lol. Let me say though:

In the first book, With Music in Their Hearts, Emma Jaine was a very special person. Not only was she named for my mother, but her personality and her story were sweet and romantic (albeit, she was a little bossy. Lol) She was the ideal protagonist.
In this second book, A Flute in the Willows, Josie is a tad bit harder to love because of her strong will, rebellion and self-absorbion. But as her father describes her she's a strong person, intensely loyal to her friends and family, defensive for the underdog and smart. The lesson she faces is hard, but this woman is more than capable of learning it.

In these two books, readers have gotten a glimpse of Claire Rayner, the youngest daughter (upcoming third book: Sing Until You Die). She can be very sweet, but also lofty in her disdain of those she considers rowdy and uncouth. Conscious of her looks and actions, she comes across at times as dainty and ladylike: the princess of the three sisters. But, underneath that frontal vision of her lies a woman who knows her own mind and is not afraid to act once a decision is reached. Her courageous actions in the midst of danger, firmly place her in my heart. And her romance with the very man she's known all her life and says she despises but is forced to work with in locating the disloyal Americans, is heartwarming and touching.

So, actually, I love all three!

So music plays a big part in this series?

Definitely! Music is soothing, healthy, vibrant, and mood enducing, but it can uplift and encourage individuals. I LOVE good music—many kinds—but my favorites are my go-to resources when I need my spirit lifted. In this series, Emma Jaine plays the piano (and her romantic interest—Tyrell Walker—plays even better than her). Josie Rayner Patterson plays the flute and her music is one thing that aroused her awareness of God. In Claire Rayner's story, her talented voice and singing is a major part of the story.

Finally, can you give us some tidbits about yourself? What do you like, enjoy, etc.?
I love my family and being with them, Autumn and Spring are my favorite seasons, and good home cooked meals are tops with me. Real cheesecake, homemade brownies, buttered popcorn and ice cream are favorite snacks.

I like a man who can cook and plays a mean instrument, who is strong in personality but gentle to women, children and animals.

I enjoy listening to oldies and hymns that touch my heart.

I collect, with limits, elephants, music boxes, and rocks.

I get bored easily with certain things,

Love writing—my heart passion—and can't thank God enough for giving me this talent. I'm a hybrid author, both traditionally and Indie published, and I like both!

My hubby is my hero, I wouldn't trade my two sons for the world, and my three grandboys are God's wonderful gift to me.

Thank you so much for having me, Debbie!

About the Book

Name of book: The Angel Paws Collection
Author: Mimi Milan
Genre: Multicultural, Contemporary Romance
Release date: December 7, 2017

Scent for Angel

To fight… or fall in love? The only thing Tanner McKoy wants is to disappear into the backwoods of North Carolina, hopefully forgetting about his tour in Afghanistan. However, forgetting seems improbable. And disappearing is impossible when a determined grad student uses her new shelter rescues to track him down. After a miserable breakup with her fiance, Eva Perez returns to grad school to complete her thesis and become a physical therapist. Unfortunately, that means assisting on several case studies – one of which includes a surly army veteran who refuses help. How can she win a battle with someone still stuck in combat mode?

Touched by an Angel

*Sweet Contemporary* An explosion during a tour in Afghanistan took Rhett Marshall’s sight, but not his mind. Too bad his family can’t seem to grasp that fact. He’ll do anything to regain control over his life again… even take drastic measures like marrying a complete stranger just so he can call his own shots. Luciana Lopez came to the United States on a student visa – which is about to expire. Unfortunately, finding an employer to petition for her so she can stay in the country has proven impossible. Could marriage to a desperate army veteran be the answer to her immigration problem? Enjoy the second novel in the groundbreaking, heartwarming series, Angel Paws Rescue, that donates twenty percent of proceeds to help army veterans and shelter animals.

When Angel Sing

Fast food, fast cars, and fast women… Eddie Rivera, a Chicano rock star hoping to break into the American music scene, has always lived life in the fast lane. The last thing he planned on was a country cutie with the belief that a guy “won’t buy the cow if he’s getting the milk for free.” Can a shot at her lifelong dreams and a rescue kitty help him change her mind? From boys to battlefields, Rachel Linden may have lost her hearing but she has never lost a fight. Of course, she’s never had her dream of singing dangled in front of her either. Is there a strategy she can employ to win a war of wishes… without losing her heart?

MY REVIEW :
"The Angel Paws Collection" by Mimi Milan is a collection of three stories about rescue animals and wounded veterans. All three stories are also love stories.

I really didn't like these stories as much as I wanted to because I felt the stories were more contemporary than Christian, yes I know the genre is listed as contemporary but I am disappointed with some of the dialogue.

One of the stories deals with teenage drinking and when one of the girls doesn't wake up, a teenage boy tries to throw her in the lake to hide that she died from alcohol poisoning.

I do like that the stories were about three different injuries from a war.

I didn't really not like the stories, I just thought the one story about the rock star was just more edgier than I like, yes the story was a clean read.

So if you like romance stories then you are sure to like this collection!

I was given a complimentary copy by Celebrate Lit. These opinions are my own.

About the Author

Mimi Milan is an award winning, bestselling author of both historical and contemporary romance. Currently pursuing her MFA in Creative Writing at Queens University, she spends most of her time in the suburbs of Charlotte, crafting stories her family and imaginary friends inspire.

Guest Post from Mimi Milan

I have to be honest. I don’t know why I wrote Scent of an Angel. The journey first began when I was asked to join a box set of sweet contemporary romances with seven other authors. Eager for a new experience (my first box set!) I immediately agreed. However, I wasn’t sure what I would write. I had never written a sweet contemporary before – only historicals. While clean and even inspirational, my stories were all full of action and suspense, too. That didn’t exactly sound like “sweet contemporary” to me. So, I set out to find stories that would draw inspiration. At the same time, I was assigned to read The Things They Carried by Tim O’Brien. (Did I mention I’m now in grad school?) I couldn’t get the story out of my mind. I kept dwelling on all the pain and suffering soldiers must endure in order to keep the rest of us safe here at home. Their pain doesn’t end, either. Many return to the States with both physical disabilities and mental illnesses that most civilians couldn’t imagine living with. Right then, I knew I wanted to do something that helped the ones that made it back to us. Since the books in my first series, The Jericho Resistance, donates funds to fight against human trafficking, I liked the idea of copying the same model to help support our veterans. That’s when Tanner McKoy and Eva Perez came to life, driving the story and my mission onward. Touched by an Angel and When Angels Sing were natural follow-ups for the Angel Paws Rescue anthology. Today, I’m pretty fortunate. I was asked to join yet another series, The Twelve Days of Christmas Mail Order Brides. So, I’m about to finish up edits on my contribution, The Dancing Lady. I’m at my kitchen table in my nice, warm two-bedroom home with a cup of coffee and a muffin from my favorite local bakery. The children are still asleep, making the house unusually quiet. Looking out the frosted window at a yard lightly dusted with white, I feel safe and at peace. All is right in my small corner of the world. I thank God for that. I thank Him for the veterans that make it so.

Interview

1 What is the first book that made you cry?

This is going way back, but as a second grader, I remember crying when I read in One Hundred and One Dalmatians that Cruella de Vil kidnapped the puppies. And I cried for joy when they escaped and got home again.

2 What book title best describes your life?

Happily Ever After

3 If you could tell your younger writing self anything, what would it be?

I gave up writing for about seven years because of all the rejections, so I’d tell that younger me: “Keep going. You may feel discouraged right now, but you don’t know how close you are to an acceptance.”

4 What made you want to become a writer?

Two reasons: 1) I loved to read; and 2) I did it to keep my sanity when all five of my children were age seven and younger.

5 What book that you have read has most influenced your life?

Mr. God, This is Anna by Flynn.  Interestingly enough, it wasn’t written as a Christian book, but the little girl in the book had such a deep trust and unshakeable faith in God, it made me want to have a faith as pure and simple as hers. Although she’d been abandoned and abused, no matter what happened, she viewed it as God’s plan. She also rejoiced in everything she learned – about mathematics, patterns, nature – as a beautiful gift from God. In her mind, He’d hidden all these wonderful secrets for us to discover. Although some of her views were unorthodox, her heart was always in the right place.

6 Does your family support your career as a writer?

Yes, my children like to come to my events, and my grandchildren often help to promote them by telling their teachers and friends’ parents that I write books. One nine-year-old grandson even arranged an autographing session for me at his school open house.

7 Are your characters based off real people or did they all come entirely from your imagination?

For the most part, they come from my imagination, but I do sometimes pattern certain personality traits after people I know. I also find that the characters are often struggling with lessons I need to learn, so I suppose there’s a tiny bit of me in each character too.

8 Does your book have a lesson? Moral?

All my books have an underlying theme. The one that occurs most often is the importance of forgiveness – forgiving others, forgiving yourself, and most of all, believing in and accepting God’s forgiveness.

9 What has your experience been like as an Author? Bruises, Highlights, and lessons?

It’s been an interesting journey. The most difficult part had to be the years when I was racking up rejections. Often editors would write encouraging notes, but they turned down the manuscripts. As I said earlier, I actually gave up writing for quite a while. The biggest highlight of my career came soon after I began writing again. I signed with an agent who sold not just one book, but got me a three-book contract.

It would be nice to say that everything flowed well from then on, but many bumps and bruises followed. My agent died right before the first book came out, which was heartbreaking. Her assistant took over and has proved to be a wonderful champion for my books. Then my publisher decided to close their fiction line, so one of my books ended up orphaned. My agent came to the rescue and pitched a new series to another publisher. And then a real miracle happened. A different publisher offered to take on the orphaned book and its sequel. If it sounds like the writing life is like a roller coaster ride, you’re right. It definitely is. I’ve also had to learn to depend on God through all those ups and downs.

10 What are you most looking forward to in the next 10 years?

I have a lot of travel planned and quite a few books I want to write. I’m looking forward to spending time with my family and seeing my grandchildren grow up.

Thank you so much for such insightful questions, Debbie. I really appreciate you having me on your blog.

My Review:
"The Hope of Christmas" is a collection of three stories. One is about a man who sends for a mail order bride but his best friend decides that none of the women who writes back is good enough for him. Another story is about a storm on a warship and is based on actual history. The last story is about a woman doctor.

These story are all about hope and love. They also show how sometimes God's plans and ways are different from ours.

"Christmas Embers" by Chautona Havig Book Tour and GiveAway

About the Book

Name of book: Christmas Embers
Author: Chautona Havig
Genre: Contemporary Christmas
Release Date: November 25, 2016

It’s a truth universally unacknowledged that sin will hunt you down and advertise its presence the moment you try to hide it. Emily Byrne sits in her daughter’s classroom listening to the deepest wishes of twenty kindergarteners as she sketches them. But when little Joey Cordell breaks down, weeping and insisting the only thing he wants to find is his father, she isn’t sure where her Christmas project will take her. Davia Cordell came to Rockland for one purpose–find her son’s father before she dies. An ex-prostitute, she’s well aware that the news will cause waves, but what’s a mother to do? As these women join forces to search for Joey’s father–a Rockland area pastor, no less– Emily learns compassion for a woman who just wants the best for her son and can’t quite imagine that Jesus wants anything to do with her. Each day, Davia weakens until Emily isn’t confident she’ll find the boy’s father in time–if at all. Doubts form. Should she look? Is it right to risk destroying a family like this–an entire church? The weight of that responsibility crushes her as Davia wastes away before her eyes. A mother’s love. A boy’s confidence. A family’s faith. A preacher’s failure. Is redemption even possible anymore? Christmas Embers: a story of love, failure, and redemption.

My Review:
"Christmas Embers" by Chautona Havig is not your typical feel good Christmas read. In fact, it is a real tearjerker about adultery. This story is a real honest look at how adultery affects more than just the two people involved.

I really appreciate the fact that Chautona Havig uses a preacher in this story to show that no one is immune to sin and that no sin is ever really completely hidden. I also like that she shows hows temptation can and does come without any warning and we have to be aware and fight it, and pride can be a person's biggest downfall.

I urge every one of my blog readers to read the guest post from Chautona Havig and learn why she wrote this book.

This story clearly points out that when adultery is committed, the entire family suffers even children.

I wish I could say that this story has a happy ending, but even if the ending happens to be what you wanted to happen or not, the consequences still has to be faced and nothing ever remains the same after adultery.

Joey's story will definitely pull at your heart strings.

"Christmas Embers" by Chautona Havig is one story that I think all couples should read and discuss together because adultery is so common today.

I was given a complimentary copy by the author and Celebrate Lit. These opinions are my own.

Guest Post from Chautona Havig

Infidelity to the Tune of Adeste Fideles

“I think my husband is having an affair.” An explanation followed. Look, I tend to be one who assumes the best of others—to a fault even. I read the “evidence” and frankly could see it going either way. It’s hard to tell across thousands of miles. While others on the message board saw red flag after red flag—and frankly, I did, too—I also saw perfectly innocent explanations for things. It’s a curse sometimes—that ability to see both sides of an issue. I cautioned against assumptions no one would want other people to make of themselves. And I prayed she was wrong. She wasn’t. It wasn’t the first time I’d come face to face with infidelity. As a child, there was an extended family member. As a newlywed, one of my wedding party—then another. Then another. The excuses, the justifications. Friends and I went to confront a sister in Christ on her affair with her husband’s best friend. We foolishly asked “what happened?” regarding her marriage. Her words: “We drifted apart.” I wanted to scream the words that battered my brain and heart. “Then row back together!” But over the years, it just grew worse. One by one, wives and husbands tossed aside vows made to a brother or sister in Christ—vows made before the Lord—in favor of what sometimes were serial affairs. Abuse. Horror. I’ve prayed women I love through court cases, medical visits, and disclosures from children no mother should ever have to hear. I’ve prayed for men I didn’t even like because of the pain their wives inflicted each time she left them alone with the kids. He knew. He always knew. Adultery is real. It’s ugly. And there’s absolutely a cure for it. Jesus. 100% surrender to Jesus. But as long as we rely on those little loops on the back of our boots instead of the saving, healing, strengthening power of Jesus, we’re just as vulnerable as the next person. And that’s why I wrote Christmas Embers. I took every heartbreaking story I’d observed over the years and put in each character for a reason. Every scene, every plot point, every twist—I put them exactly how and where they are for a reason. They’re there as a warning. This isn’t your lighthearted Christmas novel. Some have suggested I shouldn’t have set it at Christmastime. But you know what? Over half the disclosures I’ve ever heard of happened between Thanksgiving and New Year’s Day. I couldn’t get the idea of Joey’s story out of my head. And to write his story, it had to be at Christmas. Let me say it again. While Christmas may not seem like the optimal time for a hard-hitting book like this, I had to do it. Adultery is reaching epidemic proportions in the church. There’s a solution. His name is Jesus.
