"Catching Hope" by Kathy Cassel is a book that I read in one setting and really was kept on the edge of my seat because the book felt like it was a true story but I guess it isn't but it is another story that could have happened. 

I really felt like I was there with the four as they went through the struggle to get to get back to the resort after they were kidnapped.  This was a story of learning  to get along and survive. 

I really enjoyed when one of the characters talked and shared about confident hope with the others.

I was given a contemporary copy by the author and Celebrate Lit and these are my own opinions.

Kathy Cassel lives in the Florida panhandle with her husband and four of their eight children, five of whom are adopted. She is a motorcycle rider, scuba diver, and loves spending time with her family. Her debut novel, Freerunner, was published by Elk Lake Publishing, Inc. in 2019.

My Experience with Haiti

Prior to the 2010 catastrophic 7.0 magnitude earthquake that caused immense damage to the country of Haiti, many people would not have been able to tell you that Haiti and the Dominican Republic share the island of Hispaniola just a two hour flight from Miami.

I knew where it was because our family had adopted a child from Haiti in 1997. At the time the earthquake took place, my husband and I were in the process of adopting twins from a different orphanage in Port au Prince Haiti. It had been over three years and our adoption was not yet complete. During those three years I visited the twins at the orphanage five times. Other family members went with me on some of those trips, and at one point, all of our children still living at home went to visit the orphanage.

This was an eye opening experience for my family. In fact, I volunteered us to do the daily wash. That meant hand washing clothes and sheets for 135 orphans using large metal tubs and harsh soap, then rinsing the clothes in other tubs before hand wringing them and hanging them on clotheslines. Once home, my children no longer complained about unloading the dryer!

Cooking was done in large pots over open fires and mainly consisted of rice and beans, or red sauce over rice. The cooks originally prepared the food in a wooden shack, but more than once one of them would get so hot she’d pass out, so an outdoor area was set up for food preparation.

After the earthquake, there was a mountain of paperwork to be done to get refugee status for children in the orphanages who had families waiting for them. Finally the children were brought to the United States, although some of the orphans went to other countries too, to be united with their forever families. Sadly, many were held in the airport for days before being released. For our family, the long wait was over January 25, 2010. Now our family is complete with three birth children and five adopted children, three of whom are from Haiti.

Some of the places mentioned in the book resemble real places in Haiti, although they have been fictionalized. I hope you will not only read Catching Hope, but will also take time to learn more about the country of Haiti.

"The Rubber Band" by Christy Hoss is a fun novel that has third graders as the main characters. This book is a story of friendships that are based on being sent to the principal's office. It has lessons on bulling and diabetics.  It also shows that sometime a person acts differently than who they really are because of circumstances in their life and because it is easier to just let the rumors go on instead of trying to beat them. I think this would be a great book to read along with a 2-5th grader and have great discussions with them. This book shows that it is important to have dreams and not to give up on them. I knew I was going to like this book from the beginning when it starts out with the "good kid" getting sent to the principal's office for shooting a rubber band at a classmate. 

This book brought up some school memories that I have forgotten, both good and bad, and makes me glad that I am not in school anymore.  I think this would be a great book for teachers to have in their classes for all students to read because of the lessons taught about getting along together.

I love this quote from the book, "The only way to survive the bad notes life sings to you is to keep playing until the music is in tune again."

Christy caught the writing bug in second grade after winning a prize for a five-page story about her dog, Noodles. Mrs. Olson told her she was destined to be a writer and that dream never left her thoughts. After teaching elementary school for fifteen years, Christy fulfilled her childhood dream with her debut novel, The Rubber Band. She substitute teaches to support her writing career, deriving writing inspiration from the students and situations she encounters.

At age twenty-five, she was diagnosed with type-one diabetes but refuses to let it limit her. Her diabetic alert dog, Aiden, has saved her life uncountable times and will appear in future installments of The Rubber Band. Christy lives by this equation: Living + diabetes = LIVE-abetes.

Noodles is the reason I am a writer. Noodles was my childhood dog’s name. I loved her oodles and oodles. She was a dachshund, not a poodle. I often drew her in my doodles. (Can you tell I’m an elementary school teacher?) A few short years ago, when I was in second grade, I entered a class writing contest. My story was five sentences long but won first place. The teacher told me I was destined to be a writer. That encouragement never left me. I grew up in the small town of Thief River Falls, Minnesota, and always loved writing in school, especially fiction. I wrote stories for my friends and for myself to create situations I could only dream of. As an adult, I moved to California, determined to live for God. He led me back to college where I fell in love with writing again. I won a state-wide award for my feature article in the JC’s newspaper, confirming my heart’s desire. Fast forward through marriage, kids, and a teaching job—my friends begged me to write about a recurring night dream I had, which was like watching the ending of a suspense thriller movie. Through writing conferences, critique groups and late nights, I wrote Palms of Death by starting at the end and working my way backwards. After rewriting it several times, I self-published it in 2018. At my first major writers’ conference, the Lord undeniably called me to write. So, the real reason I write is not because of Noodles, but because I want to always be a faithful follower of Jesus Christ and wholeheartedly follow His direction. That’s my story, just a bit of the whole kit and caboodle.

"Delia and the Drifter" by Melody Carlson is my favorite of her books that I have read. This is a sweet Christian historical romance. I am really amazed at how some families valued money above people. This is a story of surprises and twists. It is also book 1 in the "Westward to Home" series. I am not sure if there are going to be more books or not but the cover says book 1 so I'm guessing there is.

This book really kept me read from the beginning, I had to know how it all ended. I really think this title fits the story. When I read stories like these I sometimes wonder what I would do if I discovered that I wasn't who I thought I was or that my aunt was really my grandmother or my sister was my mom, not that both of these happened in this story, but now I hope I have you just curious enough to pick up this book and read it for yourself. I mean there is lots more in the book, but you will have to discover all of  for yourself.

Melody Carlson has written more than 200 books (with sales around 6.5 million) for teens, women, and children. Her annual Christmas novellas become more popular each year. I love historical stories about women. Particularly ones in the American frontier and old west. Probably because I grew up hearing pioneer stories from my grandparents, whose parents arrived in covered wagons. But contributions made by pioneering females is often overshadowed by their male counterparts. That’s why I enjoy researching and telling these fictional yet reality-based stories of women who lived and loved and did their part to settle the frontier. To me they are the unsung heroes of the West.

"Tides of Duplicity"by Robin Patchen is a fast paced suspense. It involves kidnapping and drama and romance and faith.  This is a clean romance novel but I really though that it moved too fast. I mean, I know woman who go on adventures to a vacation spot isn't all that careful, but for Tabby to go of with  Fitz  hiking all alone  and just after meeeting him and then for her to be even thinking this guy might be a serial killer was a little over the top for me. No, that isn't a spoiler alert because Fitz isn't one. I know this book is fiction but I was like Gee.

If you like a book with lots of turns and twists then this book is for you.  This books brings the mystery into the first few chapters when Flitz gets a phone call and he learns that his sister is kidnapped.

This is the second book in the series and I didn't read the first one but I have downloaded it and will read as as I can and hope to read book 3 when it comes available.

Do you remember the show Party of Five? It ran for six seasons back in the 90s. I wasn’t a huge fan of the show itself, but I loved the premise: the oldest son of five children becomes the guardian for his younger siblings after their parents are killed in a car accident.

Talk about fodder for a great story.

When I was dreaming about Tides of Duplicity, I decided my hero, Fitz McCaffrey, had a similar story. In his case, his parents died when he was twenty-one, leaving him as the sole guardian of his eight-year-old sister, Shelby.

Do you remember being twenty-one? I do, and let me tell you, I wouldn’t have had the first idea how to raise an eight-year-old, especially one dealing with the trauma of losing her parents. Fitz didn’t know, either.

Sure, thanks to insurance, they had plenty of money to survive. He was able to finish college, go to the police academy, and get a job. But emotionally, Fitz didn’t know what he was doing. What he knew was that his sister needed him, and he loved her enough to figure it out.

Our story picks up eight years later when Fitz and Shelby go to Belize for vacation. Shelby meets a teenage boy who takes up all her time. Fitz doesn’t complain when he meets a beautiful woman named Tabby. They spend two weeks together, and by the time those weeks are up, Fitz has fallen hard.

But the morning Tabby leaves, Fitz discovers a few shocking truths:

Tabby was caught on tape stealing from the hotel safe.

The hotel safe held a half million dollars’ worth of jewels belonging to a mafia boss—who happens to be the father of Shelby’s new boyfriend.

And the mob boss wants Fitz to get his stuff back.

His leverage?

He’s taken Shelby.

Shelby’s the only family Fitz has left. He loves her like a father loves a daughter, and he’ll do anything to get her back.

Even betray the woman he’s come to love.

I loved writing this story. I loved writing the conflict Fitz deals with—the desire to save Shelby vs. the desire to protect Tabby from a very dangerous man. I love seeing his newfound faith at work. Frankly, as the world dealt with all the drama of 2020, I loved writing about exotic locations that took me out of my normal life—a couple of resort towns, not to mention Tabby’s hometown, the little snow-covered village of Coventry, New Hampshire.

As the winter winds blow, I hope you’ll take this trip with Fitz and Tabby and Shelby. I think you’re going to love it.

"Dream Again" by  Ann Marie Bryan

"Dream Again" by  Ann Marie Bryan is a story filled with the aftereffects of loss, one of the characters through death, the other a relationship gone wrong, trusts and love. 

This is a story about keeping secrets isn't a good thing! 

I really liked that this story is about a book editor and a writer. What could be better for a reader than to read about an author and the editor. But I wonder does an editor really research out an area the writer is writing about? If not, the book is fiction right?  It could happen which makes this book believable. 

As the title suggests this is a second chance at love novel! 

This story is a real heart warming "True to Life" story.

Again, fiction has spoken to me, I am going top share two passages from the book and see if they speak to you as well. " The enemy knows your potential,  and that is why he tried to you snuff you out,"..... 

"Don't let your brokenness take you off course of your destiny. Let it go and be healed. God kept you here because there's oil in you. Yes, there's oil in you."  

#2 "When suffering slaps you in the face, you see exactly what you're made of" ..... The great thing is that the Lord gave me enough for the journey, ands He made sure I had more than enough to sustain me wherever He needs me to be.

A fun fact on why I like to say that fiction is real life.The female character in this book is a fan of Jolly Ranchers. I also am a fan. I have a bag by my side when ever I am reading  because the characters in the books are always eating and the meals described makes me hungry so  I like to be prepared.

"Soon the Dawn' is a novella that has been written as a bridge between past works ( "Women of Rock Creek" series) and the author’s new upcoming "Valley of Promise" series. It is easily enough to understand the story without reading the the author's past work but as always I am glad I have read the others.
To me this novel isn't written in story form, but more as the character telling the story, which I think I enjoyed. But to be honest, I hope the rest of the series is more like novels and not just a retelling. These stories are based on the author's grandmother's life.


This book focuses on forgiveness and the ending points readers into a new beginning starting Ella and her son.


This novella made me cry because of some of the family members dying of typhoid, which I know really happened so the pain I felt was much deeper than normal when reading fiction and the characters die.


I am awaiting the rest of this series.

When the Backstory Is Tragic 

 

Family lore abounds in my family tree, much of it tragic. There’s the Boyd Irish crystal heiress who forsook her heritage for love in 1747 colonial America. The Billingsley American patriot hanged in his front yard by Tories in 1776. The Brooks great-grandfather who lost his three brothers in the Civil War and its aftermath. And the De Graffenried Swiss baron who brought a group from Switzerland to establish New Bern, North Carolina in 1711 and was captured by Indians.

 

Among the most tragic stories is how my grandmother, Ella Pyle Banks, buried 5 daughters and 2 husbands. Mama Ella and Papa Tribble’s story has waited years to be told. Part of it is the inspiration for my latest novella release, Soon the Dawn.

 

Ella Jane Pyle met William Tribble Banks in Indian Territory prior to Oklahoma statehood. They married in Elmore City in 1904 and welcomed seven girls over the next 18 years. Papa Tribble, a kind and sensitive one-armed man, farmed. And Mama Ella, known for her salt-of-the-earth character and neighborliness, was the one folks called on to tend their sick and prepare their loved ones’ bodies for burial. She possessed a will of iron, but her voice was whisper soft. I love the story about how Papa tried to kiss her while they were courting, and she responded with a slap. “No kiss from me until you’ve proposed.”

 

When I decided to write for publication, I knew I would create stories based on my family’s experiences. There are transatlantic stowaways, rejection by Quaker brethren, murder of a groom at his wedding reception, prisoners of war, deaths by lightning, fortunes won and lost, and more disease and death than I can imagine. With such drama hanging on the various branches, how could I not include these stories?

 

What’s an author to do with such tragedy?

 

Tragedy and loss are integral parts of life on fallen Earth, but triumph invariably attends each loss. Wellness follows disease. Light peeks through the darkness. Blessings attend tragedies. And life follows death. It’s the space between the two that intrigues me as a storyteller.

 

My task, then, in creating a story inspired by Papa Tribble and Mama Ella’s experiences was to find the colorful strands among the black, the shining light amid the darkness, and the blessings tucked into the folds of the woe.

Soon the Dawn contains dark and light strands and many colors between. But it’s the stitching—Jesus—who binds the strands together. He turns an ordinary morning into a hint of the “Sweet By & By.” As the delicate aroma of the Rose of Sharon, He scents the sultry stillness before a summer storm. And He wraps the bitterness of grief and failure in the richness of His incomparable grace.

I offer Soon the Dawn to Jesus as a tale that reaches beyond the ordinary to the extraordinary because of His grace.
